"Local abstract artist and natural ink maker Melissa Jenkins is passionate about “noticing” the beauty of nature and transforming that beauty into sustainable abstract art and eco-friendly art supplies. Melissa can be found foraging in the farm fields of Erin, ON, handcrafting ink in her old stone farmhouse, finding solace in her home studio, or teaching workshops in the Greater Toronto area."
We started carrying Melissa Mary Jenkin's art in the shop from the very beginning. In fact, she was one of the first independent artists we brought into our collection and brand as we found our groove with local & handmade items!
An absolute treasure to work with, we found her earthy-bohemian-contemporary style a complete breath of fresh air in the home, and our customer's began to take a liking to it too. As a former teacher, Melissa carries a zest for life and a passion for her work like no other. Her use of material is both original and extremely thoughtful—as she works with homemade natural inks and forages for completely sustainable materials, often from her own backyard!
The knowledge, intention, and detail she brings into her pieces led us to approaching her about hosting a couple workshops in our space. She has taught Mudcloth Barnboard painting with us, as well as a Paint the Night Sky workshop—both left participants feeling uplifted, grateful, and anxious to continue creating in the future! We're excited to have her come into our space again, when it's safe to do so of course.
Recently Melissa has completed a set of continuous line botanical drawings for us, and we couldn't be more thrilled! Minimalistic, modern, and organic, we can't help but feel that these drawings are just the right amount of zen your home needs moving into the warmer months ahead.
These signed botanical line drawings are original and drawn onto Strathmore watercolour paper. Melissa has found inspiration from the wild fields in her backyard to compose these botanical pieces. Each work measures 8" x 12", and comes unframed.
